Labour members split on whether Starmer should continue, and half think he cannot turn the party’s fortunes around

Ahead of the local elections on May 7th, our most recent poll of Labour members showed that over two-fifths (45%) already thought that Keir Starmer should stand down after the elections, with 42% believing he should remain in post.

On top of this, though 49% consider Starmer and the Labour government equally culpable for the party’s performance in the local elections, an additional 24% hold Starmer mostly responsible, compared to 15% who lay greater blame at the feet of the Labour government generally.

Despite the membership being split on these fronts, half (51%) do not anticipate that Starmer can turn the Labour Party’s fortunes around ahead of the next general election, notably ahead of the third (34%) who do think he is capable of doing so.

A third of members have considered leaving the party

With disquiet now entrenched amongst the Labour membership, it is little surprise that over a third (36%) have considered leaving the party in the last 6 months. Just over three-fifths (63%) have not.

With the final results from the local, Senedd, and Holyrood elections only adding to the party’s woes, it is unlikely that the concerns of the membership will go away any time soon.
