Face-to-Face Market Research at Survation

Face-to-Face Market Research

For the people a screen won’t reach. In-person interviewing through our fieldwork partnership, with hundreds of MRS-trained interviewers across the UK and Ireland: on the street, at the doorstep, in venues and at events, with tablets for fast, accurate capture. Face-to-face is the right mode when the audience is local, older, less online, or when the question needs showing rather than telling.

When we recommend it

  • Residents of a borough, town or ward, where online panels are too thin to be representative
  • Shoppers, visitors, passengers and audiences, interviewed where they are
  • Members and communities who respond to a person rather than a link
  • Top-up samples alongside online or telephone fieldwork to reach the groups those modes miss
  • Exit and on-the-day surveys where timing is everything

How it runs

Quotas on age, gender and social grade set by location; interviewers briefed on each project and paid at least the Living Wage; responses captured on tablets and checked daily; a fieldwork manager on every study; all work under the MRS Code of Conduct.

Recent and selected work

  • Coventry University and the MiFriendly Cities programme: 1,500 in-street interviews in three weeks, 500 each in Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton, on neighbourhood diversity and attitudes to migration
  • Face-to-face top-ups on constituency and borough surveys where online and telephone coverage of particular groups fell short
  • RMT: 1,008 London Underground passengers interviewed at stations on ticket office closures, used in the union’s public campaign
