Major dip in Government and Johnson approval ratings, but no Labour bounce

A modest recovery in the Government and Boris Johnson’s approval ratings in our previous political poll at the end of June has been checked with a 15 point drop in government approval and a 10 point reduction in Boris Johnson’s personal approval ratings in our latest poll, conducted between 3rd and 6th July.

Favourability towards the performance of the Government is at 37% favourable and 46% unfavourable, (-9 net favourability), compared to 43% – 37% (+6 net) in the poll conducted 24th – 25th June.

The previous poll was taken in the immediate aftermath of the government’s announcement of an easing of the lockdown and so it is likely the uptick was attributed to an increased feelgood factor.

However, it hasn’t been sustained and the 15 point drop today is the most significant fall in government approval since the Dominic Cummings affair.

Labour and Keir Starmer had a significant increase in support at that time, however, Starmer has also seen a dip in ratings from +10 to +3 in the past week. There has also been no change in party voter intentions, where the Conservatives remain ahead with no change in their 7-point lead over Labour: 44% (+1) vs. 37% (+1). And Johnson is preferred over Starmer on who would make the best Prime Minister, albeit with a much reduced lead.

With the Conservatives consistently in the low to mid 40s, ultimately it is how the economy recovers in the post-COVID environment which will determine the political weather over the next few years.

Our poll features:

– General Election Voting Intention

– Party Leader Approval

– Government Performance Approval

– Best Prime Minister
